Far west Crete

An itinerary through ancient ruins, natural beauty & local gastronomy

We start our drive towards one of the most powerful hilltop ancient cities of western Crete. Walking through the picturesque village with the traditional old houses, we will come across with the remains of the Hellenistic and Roman aqueduct, the Venetian archways and the Hellenistic rock-cut houses. Heading to the ancient acropolis of Polyrrhenia we will explore a 19th-century church, which is built with 4th- century BC stone blocks and inscription slabs, as well as the impressive Hellenistic fortification walls that dominate the landscape. From the top of the acropolis we will enjoy the breathtaking views to the surrounding mountains and the Cretan Sea.

After a twenty-minute drive, we reach a rare geological phenomenon of the Cretan landscape. We are going to discover and wander around the clay cliffs, while learning a few things about their formation processes.

Our last stop is at Milia Mountain Retreat an authentic 17th century mountain settlement which has been transformed into one of the world’s best eco lodges. We have an authentic Cretan lunch at the restaurant and taste some of the best Cretan wines.

The cuisine in Milia is based exclusively on fresh, quality products of the land and the gastronomic culture of the Cretans. You will not find any weird extravagant recipes but you will surely indulge on what it means to have excellent food resources. The vegetables from the certified organic garden, the local raised meat and the various products from the nearby villages make a huge difference in taste, which cannot go unnoticed.
